Tennis is a racket game that is played between a pair of players each attempting to hit a ball which has been strung by a string with felt tape over or on a tennis court or across the opponent’s court. Serving – This refers to the number of serves one player or team makes in one game. Serving is usually the deciding factor in ties. The number of service breaks a player or team makes in one game is called a match point. Match points are added up after all ties have been played. A tie-break game has seven points. A win takes half the points, a tie takes full points and a defeat takes the other half.

Defeat – When a player or team scores more goals than their opponent in two games, then this team is defeated. Usually, the winning team is the one with the most points after the two rounds of play. However, this rule may change depending on how a tournament is organized. A tie-break game has only five points. A win takes the team with the most points and the opponents, who’ve lost, take two points.

Tossing – In general, the team that first serves first usually makes the winning shot. This is referred to as the toss. In a tie-break game, the toss is reversed. The team that first served first usually loses.

Points System – In most tournaments, a point system is used for scoring. Forces are scored according to how often they occur. A serve that beats the opponent’s return is worth five points; a forehand that sends the ball over the net worth four points; and a backhand that hits the net or the court and sets up the opponent for a winner is worth three points. A single serve that breaks the opponent’s concentration and swings the ball backwards is worth one point.
